The Sun and the Ascendant in the houses

Where two lives meet: one person's Sun and Ascendant in the other's houses.

Loving someone also brings us closer to their affairs: what worries them, what they enjoy and the decisions they are making. There are subjects on which we gladly seek our partner’s opinion; on others, a suggestion from them can feel like an intrusion. Here two readings of that closeness come together: the interest the other person awakens and the wish to intervene in their life.

The twelve astrological houses represent different areas of life. In a synastry we look at which house of one person a point from the other’s chart falls in, and that comparison directs the reading toward the matters of that house.

The question is how those areas (home, work, friendships or inner life) enter the loving encounter, and what place each person wants to give to their partner’s involvement.

There are two kinds of interaction: that of the Sun and that of the Ascendant. To make the reading easier I use the letters A and B. A is the person whose Sun or Ascendant we are considering; B, the person whose house we are referring to.

The place we give our partner’s opinion

On what matters do you like to ask your partner for advice? On which would you rather they wait until you ask? You can also ask them how they receive the remarks you make. That conversation helps tell welcome support apart from intervention that feels uncomfortable.

Recognizing what you appreciate about their presence lets you care for that closeness; saying where you need space gives them an understandable limit. Planetary contacts take the reading from the matters you share to what you awaken in each other: affection, desire, imagination and the tensions that appear between you.

A’s Sun in B’s houses

In the system I use, the Sun relates to the way each person marks out and defends their territory. When it falls in a house of the other chart, I interpret A’s interest as being directed toward the matters that house represents in B’s life.

Look up the corresponding house and see whether you recognize that interest in the relationship. The rest of the charts and the experience of both of you complete the reading.

A’s Ascendant in B’s houses

A’s Ascendant in one of B’s houses is interpreted here as a tendency for A to give opinions on, or intervene in, the matters of that house. That involvement may take the form of a suggestion, a piece of advice or an action.

B may welcome it or experience it as an intrusion. As you read each house, notice both the matter A intervenes in and B’s response: a well-received suggestion and an uncomfortable insistence produce different experiences.
