In a couple, Venus shows the way of giving and receiving affection. It is related to attraction, physical closeness and what we commonly call chemistry between two people.
When the two partners’ Venuses show affinity, this reading sees greater ease in enjoying closeness and intimacy. Caresses, gestures and ways of expressing tenderness can feel understandable and pleasant to both. Even so, each position of Venus proposes its own way of living that exchange.
Knowing the position of Venus in your birth chart and in your partner’s can help you pay attention to those differences. Not everyone wants to receive affection in the same way or needs the same frequency of contact. A gesture that for you is proof of love may feel insufficient or uncomfortable to the person who receives it. The question is how your ways of drawing close meet, and how each of you expresses what you need.
Inventory 1 weighs heavily here. Because of what they learned in their family or culture, some people can live a relationship with little physical contact without finding it unsatisfying. For others, intimacy is a fundamental part of the bond.
In my consultations and classes I’ve seen that, despite its importance, people sometimes avoid talking about it. Including it in the couple’s agreements lets each person know what the other needs and expects. Those agreements may differ from the ones you learned in your family: they need to express the way both of you want to live affection.
In this system, Venus in Aries, Virgo or Scorpio is in an adverse position, also called afflicted. These readings explore difficulties with closeness, insecurity and the fear of losing affection. They can be set in dialogue with experiences of emotional distance, conflict between the parents, jealousy or the feeling of not having had a place in the family. Such experiences come to light through each person’s own history; a planetary position is not enough to claim they happened.
When those difficulties keep repeating and cause suffering, I recommend therapeutic work that helps you understand your own way of relating. The purpose is to recognize what you have lived through and widen the range of possible responses, rather than turning an astrological description into a sentence.
